Dragon Age 2 – A Stunning RPG

Nearly all the members of the animal kingdom (save for a few special species) are social animals.

Finches are no exception; these birds need the companionship not only of the human owner but of other birds as well (preferably, another bird from the same species). So when you are ready to buy from a breeder or a pet shop, we highly recommend that you purchase at least two finches.

If you can, purchase two healthy male and female finches so you can also breed the birds later on. Avian offspring will easily come if the cage or aviary is constructed well and you are able to provide good lighting, adequate heat, and a healthy combination of seeds and live food items.

If you buy a single finch and place that animal in a small cage, the finch will experience stress and loneliness. You will not be able to fully enjoy the company of this exotic bird because it is pining for the companionship of its own species.

Often, finches can get used to other species of birds just so it can have someone to interact with inside the artificial habitat. Species like zebra finches are not picky with companions; as long as there are other birds in the cage or aviary, the zebra finch is relatively happy. So when you are buying a finch, always ask for at least two of each species.

Talk soon,

JP

How Ready Is Your Home For A Finch?

Raising finches can be one of the most rewarding experiences in the world. A well-loved and healthy finch can become a constant, caring companion. Though finches cannot be as tame as other pet birds like parrots, these birds can be taught to eat from your hands and perch on your shoulder. Finches are also shy by nature and do not nip people’s fingers if they have adapted well to their life with new owners.

But the big question here is, are you ready to take care of these exotic birds? Here are some guiding questions to help you determine your level of preparedness:

  1. Are you ok with the fact that finches, even in a caged setting, will still show facets of finches in the wild? As we have mentioned earlier, finches are not as tame as other pet birds like canaries.
  1. Do you have space at home for a large cage or mini-aviary? Finches cannot be placed in small cages or purchased singly without a male of female companion. If you are going to take care of finches, you need to have adequate space for their own home.
  1. Are you prepared to clean their cage or aviary on a daily basis? Finches are very active birds and can make a real mess in their cage in a short period of time. Any mess inside the cage should be cleaned to prevent diseases from spreading.
  1. Do you have the extra budget to buy special food, vitamin supplements and medicine for your finches, if need be? Finches need a combination of natural foods like seeds and live food (larvae) to be healthy.

Caring For Your Kittens

There is no doubt that kittens are absolutely adorable but they also require proper handling and care, especially in the early days to avoid both cat health problems and cat behavior problems. Whilst they are not really difficult to look after, they require certain attention to specific areas. This article examines some of the things that you need to take note of before getting a kitten.

Visit to the Vet

Before bringing your kitten home or immediately thereafter, make sure that you schedule a visit to the vet. It is important to check your kitten for major as well as minor cat health problems and also discuss with your vet its vaccination schedule. This will ensure a healthy cat in the long run.

Creating a Place for the Kitten

Similar to any new member of your family, kittens too require their own space in your home. It is important that this chosen place is comfortable, fun and safe for the kitten. Shopping for a bed for your kitten to sleep on or toys to play with is equally important when bringing home your new pet. Apart from ensuring that they enjoy their surroundings, new toys should be able to keep them occupied and not encourage them to attack your expensive and precious furniture.

Feeding Your Kitten

Kittens eat solid food at about four weeks of age and hence you can start with ready made cat food that is available over the counter. Make sure that all the necessary ingredients for good health and growth are in the chosen cat food. You can supplement her diet at times with minced meat or fish or even chicken but it is important to understand that this does not give kittens all the nutrition it requires.

House Training Your Kitten

Kittens are often litter trained by their mothers but in rare cases when you get one that is not, it is important to start litter training immediately. Signs such as sudden panic, vocal outburst, digging in bed or paper display the need to go to toilet and should be carefully considered when litter training. Praising your kitten for using the litter box correctly will help in training your kitten faster.

While these are just a small selection of things that you need to do to get involved in caring for your kittens, we hope that it’s a good starting point for new cat owners. Remember that you will have to cat proof your home before bringing home any kittens so as to minimize any damage to your furniture. Good luck!

Tips to Use Advantage Flea Control for Your Cat

Research has proven that one female flea is capable of producing more than a trillion descendants within a year. Advantage flea control works by restricting the adult fleas from laying eggs. The active ingredient in the medication, imidacloprid, also kills larvae in less than 20 minutes of contact, thereby breaking the flea life cycle and eradicating the fleas on your cat. Besides, imidacloprid is completely water-resistant and works effectively even after exposure to harsh sunlight.

It prevents fleas from biting on your cat’s skin in 3-5 minutes of application. And, 98 to 100 percent of the fleas die in less than 12 hours. Fleas that re-infest are terminated within 2 hours. A single treatment with this medication can defend your cat from fleas for almost a month.

How to Effectively Apply Advantage Flea Control on Your Cat

This product is a topical solution, which is to be applied on your cat’s neck. It will seep through its coat and protect the whole-body from flea. Ensure that the product does not get in your cat’s’ mouth or eyes. It tastes bitter and may trigger chronic salvation for some time if your cat licks it when freshly applied on the skin.

Some other instruction guidelines to use Advantage Flea Control are:

  • Take only one applicator tube at a time from the package.
  • Hold the applicator tube in a vertical position.
  • Twist the cap to break the seal and pull it off from the tube.
  • Part the hair on your cat’s neck till the skin is visible.
  • Place the tube’s tip on your cat’s skin and squeeze the solution on it directly.
  • Discard the empty tube in the trash by wrapping it in multiple layers of paper. This is because if your cat accidentally tastes it, there may produce detrimental bodily reactions.

Safety Considerations

This product has lower toxicity than other traditional flea control medications, particularly those containing organophosphates or carbamates. A majority of veterinarians consider Advantage an effective and safe method of flea control. It even works on kittens as young as eight weeks old.

Advantage Flea Control can be safely used on lactating and pregnant cats. In fact, if your cat is nursing and undergoing treatment with this medication, the kittens will also be protected from fleas.

Hot to Buy Advantage Flea Control

This medication is available in two dosage sizes, in packages containing four or six tubes. Your cat will have to be weighed to be prescribed the right dosage. Advantage Flea Control can be purchased even without a vet’s prescription. You can get it at a veterinarian’s office or you could choose a more affordable option- buying it online.

Visit a reputable discount pet pharmacy like www.petplanrx.com to get great deals on several branded and generic medications like Advantage Flea Control for keeping your cat hail and hearty. This site also offers live assistance to help you find the best medical solutions to your cat’s problems.

How Much Does It Cost To Neuter A Rabbit?

Rabbit neutering is the surgical removal of reproductive organs of a male or female rabbit. According to some studies, a rabbit that has been neutered has the chances of living a longer life because of the absence of the sexual aggression. Neutering a rabbit is known to be safe these days, and the technical term for neutering a female rabbit is called spaying. However, neutering is commonly used for either male or female.

Benefits of Neutering a Rabbit

One of the obvious benefits of neutering a rabbit is that he or she cannot reproduce. Rabbits are known to reproduce abundantly in a span of a month, and rabbit shelters and rescue homes are already packed with unwanted rabbits. So might as well prevent it from adding more. Another benefit is that a rabbit becomes healthier and will actually live longer. A female rabbit that has been spayed has almost no risk of reproductive cancers such as ovarian cancer, which unspayed female rabbits are very susceptible to. Meanwhile, a male bunny will be less dominant and hostile. Rabbits that have been neutered become calmer and friendlier, because they like living together and make more companions.

When Is A Rabbit Allowed To Be Neutered

Rabbits are only allowed to be neutered or spayed after they become sexually mature. Generally, female rabbits usually become mature at 4 months and male rabbits have their testicles descend at 3 ½ months. However, many veterinarians choose to wait longer than these months. Six months for female rabbits, while five months for male rabbits. While the rabbits have not been neutered yet, it is always advisable to keep them separated.

The Average Cost Of Neutering a Rabbit

Neutering a female rabbit is more expensive and the expenses usually depend on your veterinarian. The low end for the procedure alone costs somewhere between $150 to as high as $300. But for those living in a superior, populated metro area, the procedure can cost about $200 to $500 because of the higher cost of living.

Added Costs You Need To Know

An initial exam will be done that is usually not included in the total costs of the surgery. Most veterinarians charge about $50 to $150 for this exam alone. In the surgical procedure, the use of anesthesia will likely be an additional cost as well. After the surgery is done, there are required follow up visits that need to be made to make sure that the rabbit is healing properly.

Cats and Cancer

While cancer in cats is not as common as it in dogs, it is still one of the leading causes of death in older cats. According to the Animal Cancer Foundation, 6 million cats will be diagnosed with cancer in the United States along. And because cats are masters at masking illness, it is often harder to detect. Cancer used to be a death sentence for cats, but recent advances in feline cancer research have made treatment possible in many cases. Just like with human cancers, early detection is key to successfully treating feline cancers.

Common cancers in cats

One of the most common forms of cancer in cats is lymphoma. Other frequently seen cancers are oral squamous carcinomas, similar to what people get. Fibrosarcomas, or soft tissue sarcomas, are tumors developing in muscle or in the connective tissue of the body. These are generally associated with injections and vaccinations. Other forms of cancer are less common, but they do occur in cats: lung tumors, brain tumors, nasal tumors, liver tumors. There are fewer incidences of mammary tumors (yes, cats can get breast cancer, too) since more cats are spayed and spaying is one of the best ways to prevent this particular cancer.

Symptoms of feline cancer

People and cats both show similar symptoms when it comes to cancer:

  • Lumps, especially lumps that seem to be getting bigger
  • Sores that don’t heal
  • Changes in bowel or bladder habits
  • Unexplained bleeding or a strange discharge from any body opening
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Breathing problems
  • Lameness or stiffness that persists over a period of time
  • Bad odor
  • Having trouble eating or swallowing food

If you notice your cat showing any of these symptoms, take him to your veterinarian for a thorough examination.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis will vary, depending on the presenting symptoms. An exam will most likely include a complete blood chemistry, blood count, and urinalysis. Your veterinarian may take x-rays, perform an ultrasound, and take tissue biopsies. Depending on where the biopsies are taken from, this may require sedation, or full anesthesia. Biopsies will be reviewed by a veterinary pathologist to determine the type of cancer.

Treatment

Treatment options for cats are almost as varied as treatment options for human cancers, and will depend on the type of cancer. Surgery is the most common treatment for any lumps or growths that need to be removed. In some cases, surgery can be curative. Other cancers may require chemotherapy or radiation. Cats tend to tolerate chemotherapy much better than people, and can have good quality of life for many months and sometimes even years following treatment. Radiation therapy may be used for tumors that can’t be removed. This is a more stressful therapy for cats, since it will require sedation or anesthesia for each treatment.

Causes

There isn’t as much research into the causes of feline cancer as there is on the human side, but I don’t think it’s much of a leap to assume that some of the same environmental toxins that cause cancer in humans also cause cancers in our cats. There have been some studies looking at secondhand smoke and feline cancers. Vaccinations and other injections have been proven to be responsible for fibrosarcomas, and these findings have led to changing vaccine protocols for cats.

Prevention

While some cancers are caused by genetic mutations, there are still things cat owners can do to lessen the likelihood that their cats get the disease.

A wholesome, species-appropriate, meat-based diet is one of the most important foundations for preventing cancer, or any other health problems in cats. A balanced grain-free raw meat or canned diet provides the best nutrition for your cat. As obligate carnivores, cats do not need carbohydrates in their diet. In fact, commercial dry cat foods have been linked to many of the degenerative diseases we’re seeing in cats such as diabetes, kidney failure, and inflammatory bowel disease. The latter is often a precursor for intestinal lymphoma. The one best thing you can do for your cat’s health is to eliminate all dry food from his diet.

Environmental toxins and stressors are also linked to cancer in humans, and probably cause cancers in cats. Avoid exposure to commercial cleaning products and use natural products instead. Make sure your cat always has pure (bottled or distilled) water available. Most municipal water systems are contaminated with anything from heavy metals to chlorine. Don’t use chemical flea and tick products on your pets, use natural alternatives instead. Minimize vaccinations, and if your cat already has cancer, do not vaccinate the cat at all.

Cancer is a devastating disease, but early detection, combined with ever increasing treatment options, makes it possible for cats to continue to live with good quality of life.

Got Cat Hair? 3 Ways To Take the Hair Out Of Your Air

If you are living with a cat, you’ve got cat hair. If you’re reading this article you’ve probably got more cat hair than you want. There are lots of fabulous reasons why owning a cat is wonderful, but the hair isn’t one of them. Here are 3 ways you can greatly reduce the hair in your air.

Change Central Heat And Air Filters Often – These filters are exposed to all of the air in your home. If you are seeing lots of particles in your air, it’s an indication that the filters are clogged and are no longer able to trap enough particulates to make a difference. Or it can also mean that the type of filter you’re using is not effective against the particles in your home.

When your heating and cooling systems are serviced, ask if the filters you are using are the best at removing cat air, and if not, what your options are. Also ask for a suggested length that the filter will last based on how full it is on the day of the maintenance. Take that advice and be consistent about changing the filters.

Use A HEPA Vacuum – This type of vacuum is a little more expensive but it is well worth it because of the efficiency with which it keeps particles contained. Many cleaners will blow air out and in the process send particles back into the air.

This type of filter on the vacuum keeps particles from re-entering your air and reduces the hair that is available to go airborne again with daily activities in your home. Sticking to a regular cleaning schedule will make a huge difference in reducing hair on surfaces, furniture and floors.

Continually Filter Your Air – Even though the hair isn’t an actual allergen, the dander (dead flakes of skin) from your cat sticks to the hair. The highly potent protein in the dander is what makes most people’s allergies go into overdrive. So by eliminating the hair you are also eliminating the airborne trigger that can make owning a cat tough.

Regardless of how well you vacuum or change your filters, there is still going to be some hair in your air. Using a high efficiency particle arresting (abbreviated as HEPA) filter, you are constantly removing 99,997 out of every 10,000 particles that are .3 microns or larger in size.

Because cat hair is way bigger than .3 microns, it’s an easy target for this type of filter. So without lifting a finger, cat hair and dander are constantly being reduced so that the air is fresh and clean all the time.

An excellent HEPA air purifier to remove cat hair and dander from your air is offered by PurerAir.com at http://purerair.com/cat_dander_air_purifier.html

Simple Steps To Train a Lhasa Apso Article Source

There is no doubt that Lhasa Apso are both an adorable, short legged, energetic breed of dog originating from Tibet and the chosen breed of Buddhist monks and thought to bring good fortune to their masters.

A dose of patience, consistency and gentleness are all the requirements for training that these highly regarded animal’s need. In their nature, they are suspicious of strangers, so learning to socialize at a young age should be the first step in the training process.

The command of “sit” is a command that all dogs should learn and master at from an early age and it is most effective when your pup is slightly hungry.

Training Steps:

  • Hold a morsel of food over the dogs head; bring your hand slowly back across the dog’s nose. He or she will automatically fall into a sitting position as their nose follows the direction of the food. Follow this physical movement with the verbal command “sit” in a clear, calm, controlled voice. Once he has sat, praise him with petting and the offered treat.

You must remember that whatever method us choose to use, there will be accidents; plan for them, accept them and move on without inflicting punishment toward the pup. Most accidents occur because of tiny bladders and lack of muscle control: very similar to babies of the human nature.

After each feeding session, crate your pup with a toy. Wait approximately 15 minutes and take puppy to the chosen designated toilet area. Praise the puppy when he relieves himself. If nothing happens, repeat this process in 5 minute intervals.

Lots of praise, in the form of a happy voice and petting is a wonderfully way to tell your dog that their behavior pleases you. Reducing Parrot Dust – 5 Things You Can Do To Get Rid of Bird Dust

Dust from birds such as African Greys, Cockatoos, Cockatiels, and Amazons can seem impossible to get rid of. As gorgeous as these birds are the dust they produce can be a hazard for both birds and humans. Nothing will completely eliminate it, but here are 5 things you can do that will limit the dust you see and breathe.

Provide Water for Bathing—Providing a bowl of water separate and apart from drinking water will encourage your bird to take the proverbial bird bath. Regular bathing will greatly reduce the amount of dust and dander that is available to go airborne when you pet preens, flies, shakes or plays.

You can also make bathing an activity that you do together by installing a shower perch. When you take a shower you can take your bird in with you and give it the opportunity to fly in and out of a gentle stream of water as it chooses. Consult with an avian vet about best frequency for baths and a recommendation for bird-friendly shampoo.

Reduce Fibrous Materials—Curtains, upholstered furniture, wall-to-wall carpet all make great hiding places for dust. Normal daily activities can cause the dust that has settled on these surfaces to go airborne and create a vicious cycle that can be hard to break. Use shutters, wood or tile, and leather than can be cleaned thoroughly and damp wiped to eliminate the particles completely.

Clean With Water—-Using a damp mop to clean floors will trap particles and prevent them from being able to go airborne and settle somewhere else. Likewise using a damp cloth to capture particulates on blinds, shutters, and furniture will really take the dust out of circulation.

Give Daily Attention to the Cage—-Be sure to change the cage paper each day. Use gloves and mist it first before removing it. This will minimize the amount of dust that is able to go airborne. Put soiled paper outdoors so that pollutants cannot possibly re-enter your indoor air.

Continually Filter Bird Room Air—Having a cleaner run 24 hours a day to constantly keep the level of particles low is a low maintenance, efficient and economical way to literally keep the dust and dander down.

The best type of filter for efficient removal of particulates is a HEPA (or high efficiency particle arresting) filter. Designed to remove particles that are.3 microns or greater, it is a perfect match for your bird’s dust and dander.

Using these 5 suggestions to tackle the extra particles that your birds produce will provide cleaner air for both you and your bird. And clean air can greatly lengthen your bird’s life span—and yours too.

How to Take Care of Your Pet Bird

JP Jonathan is a finch expert. For more great tips on finches zebra, visit http://www.finchesbirdscentre.com

Birds are extremely chirpy and have the ability to instantly cheer you up. If you have a leaning and passion for birds and intend to keep a few remember that it is not easy as it looks. You need to prepare for many things before you bring the bird home and then take very good care of it. Birds are very delicate creature and require specific treatment. You cannot take the liberty of dealing with things in an arbitrary manner. You must read up on bird care prior to the purchase of your favorite bird. You must remember that different birds require different care. You cannot treat all birds alike. So when you research, you must do so and look for breed specific information.

Always choose a cage that is the right size for the bird. Make sure it has enough space to spread its wings, every time it wants to. Do not put a big sized bird in a cage that is too small. That will amount to cruelty. Have to two dedicated bowls in the cage; one for bird feed and the other for water. Birds love to groom themselves and drink water. Always make sure there is clean water available for the birds.

Pay specific attention to the bird feed that you select. Make sure it is of a good quality and suits the bird. If you have two birds living in the same cage, and one of them falls ill, make sure you separate the two to contain the infection.
Female birds may require some privacy while nesting and may feel the need for a shelter, into which they can retire and not be seen by everyone. You may have to make arrangements for such shelters or houses.
These are some very general tips on keeping birds!

Long Ago Authors

Quote the Writer – “Always be nice to your editor.”

There is no denying that Ernest Hemingway’s work demanded attention when he lived. His work is far greater than ever now that he is deceased. His magnetic character as well as his writing was one of a kind. His time is gone but his work lingers on. However, this article is not totally about him. Hemingway recognized Mark Twain as one of the greatest writers of all time. I believe he’s on the mark when he said that all modern American literature comes from the book of Mark Twain, titled Huckleberry Finn. He told how there was nothing before and there has been nothing as good, since. No greater personage freewheeled in the yesteryear of his life.

Mark Twain’s real name is Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known as America’s most famous literary icon.

His epilogue could easily have been; Mark Twain may have died but he will never be dead. Wouldn’t it be a monumental marvel to be thought of like this man who went through most of his life with a phony name? How strange it is, to strive, to strain, and struggle, marketing your writing to become an icon when all you have to do is…die. Something about death just draws people to authors and artists. Have you ever noticed, as a rule, some of the “greats” were dirt poor, save a few that were alcoholics? But who really cares. We still love `em. Their work overshadows their faults.

My favorite quote by Mark Twain:

“Substitute “d___” every time you’re inclined to write “very;” your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should be.” ~Mark Twain

Thanks to Mark Twain, I will never use “very” in my writing again. I’ll be d___ careful about that. See how well it works. I’m smiling here.

Twain began to gain fame when his story, “The Celebrated Jumping From of Calavaras County” appeared in the New York Saturday Press on November 18, 1865. Twain’s first book, “The innocents Abroad,” was published in 1869. “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” in 1876 and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” in 1885. He wrote 28 books and numerous short stories, letters and sketches.

It’s possible he realized his fame and fortune before he died in 1910, but since he’s not here to tell us, we’ll never really know. I for one, wish I could pioneer a quantum leap back into the past and right into his life. What a transfiguration that would be.

Anyway…I can dream can’t I? You and I will have to settle for the history books and his works to reveal his true worth. I believe he was a man of clear vision about life at its best and at its worst. You and I have only to read his work to realize how it stands up page for page, sensational, the very equal of an unusually rare first novel that comes along once in a lifetime.

Can’t you just see him behind the wheel of a river boat in the 1800’s? The Civil War brought the river trade to a stand still in 1861. Clemens became a river pilot’s apprentice in 1858. His pseudonym, Mark Twain, comes from his days as a river pilot. It’s a river term for a boat, meaning two fathoms of 12 feet of water is being sounded. The term, Mark Twain” means that it is safe to navigate.

Let us all hope that this kind of history about our famous writers are never
prevented from being included, considered or accepted for our school history books. What a tragedy that would be. Don’t be surprised that this could happen.

Even as I write, the idea of eliminating history of World Warll are being debated. They claim there is not enough room for all of America’s history in a book. How damn, I mean how very, stupid is that? Condense everything down, but don’t leave anything totally out. Even a ten year old can think of ways around that reasoning. You don’t have to believe that if you don’t want to.

Well…my article stands adjourned until another, “Quote the Writer” comes around.

Hope you enjoyed a bit of history about a couple of famous writers. Maybe someday your children or grandchildren will be reading about me and my books. I dare say, that’s optimism for you but not without shreds of doubt.

The Importance of Coating Canvas Printed on an Inkjet Printer

This article will discuss the importance of coating canvas printed on wide format inkjet printers such as the Canon iPF, Epson Stylus Pro, and HP Z series printers. The benefits, methods, and types of coatings will be examined.

Benefits of coating canvas

When an individual is purchasing a canvas print for their home or office, they are paying a premium price for a premium product. Taking the extra step of applying a protective coating is always recommended especially when one considers that it only adds pennies per square foot to the total production cost. A protective coating can change the finish of the canvas and protect it from UV light, atmospheric contaminants, and the scuffing or scratching that can occur when handled improperly.

Most inkjet canvases come in one of three finishes – matte, satin, or gloss. Those individuals printing canvas can print to a matte canvas and then use a satin or gloss finish protective coating to achieve the desired finish. Likewise, users of a gloss canvas may apply a satin finish to reduce reflectivity.

The biggest benefit of coating an inkjet canvas is protecting it from UV light and atmospheric contaminants since both can have adverse effects. UV light can cause a print to fade prematurely while atmospheric contaminants, like ozone, can cause a canvas print or other inkjet prints to yellow in a very short period of time.

Methods for coating canvas

Canvas can be coated in one of three ways – using an aerosol spray, rolling or spraying on a liquid coating, or using a liquid coating machine.

Using an aerosol spray can be very easy. One would simply need to purchase a product like Hahnemuhle Protective Spray or ClearJet Fine Art Spray and spray the canvas with two light coats with sufficient dry time between applications. The drawback to using these types of products is that they are typically solvent based so you need to either use them in a place with ample ventilation or outdoors. They are also typically more expensive than other products that can be purchased in quantities like a gallon.

Using a liquid coating by the gallon is cost effective and tends to cover better than aerosol sprays. Users can apply this type of coating in one of two ways. The use of a white, high density foam roller to roll the coating onto the canvas is best for those users that either do not have the space to use a spray booth or do not have an outdoor area to spray. When using this method, it is best to apply two light coats, only using the pressure of the roller. At times, users will run into issues with the coating bubbling or leaving lines when applied. Using a coating with self leveling agents can help. When space allows, the easiest way to coat a canvas is by using a high-pressure low-volume (HPLV) spray gun. These can be purchased in combination with an air compressor or as a single unit like the Wagner Control Spray Double Duty.

When volume demands, the final method for coating canvas is to use a coating machine in combination with a liquid coating. While very efficient, one would be looking at an investment of at least $3,000 for an entry-level model and upwards of $30,000 for a high-end model. These machines typically use very specific liquid coatings due to viscosity requirements so these coatings are typically more expensive than those that can be used in a HPLV spray gun or rolled on

Types of liquid coatings

There are two main types of liquid coatings – water-based and solvent-based. Water-based coatings work best with water-resistant canvases. In today’s market, the vast majority of inkjet printable canvases are water-resistant. Solvent-based coatings work best with non-water resistant canvases. It is always best to check with your canvas manufacturer or distributor to make sure that you are using the right coating with their canvas. Water-based coatings tend to be preferred since they do not emit the fumes that you will encounter when using solvent based coatings.

Conclusions

Using a liquid coating is a step that anyone producing inkjet canvas prints should take regardless of the type of coating or the method that will be used. The coating can give users their desired finish while protecting the canvas, adding to its longevity. The use of water-based coatings is the preferred option while using a liquid coating that comes in larger quantities, like gallons, will reduce the overall cost. Rolling the coating on is a great option if space does not permit using a HPLV spray gun.

Have You Thought About an Apprenticeship?

If you don’t know what to do, and you are not ready for college or college may not be ready for you, what about an apprenticeship? Do you like to work with your hands and your mind? Many occupations can be learned on the job (OJT) through an apprenticeship.

An apprenticeship/vocational training prepares you for a career through a planned program of on-the-job learning with classroom instruction, while you work and earn a salary. The programs can last from one to six years, and you can choose careers in areas such as telecommunications, health care, computing, business support and the arts.

What is so special about OJT (on the job training) or a vocational experience?
A vocational experience allows you to learn, work and make money all at once. It affords you the opportunity to learn a trade or apprentice, to learn from the bottom up, to experience daily what the vocation entails, to get educated about the field, and to learn how to actually implement what you learned into the real job. Most of us just read things in a book and decide from there, what we might like and not like. With OJT, you actually do the work, get the education and get paid for it. While most of us know beforehand all about a vocational area and if we would like to do it, the idea of earning and learning is a wonderful prospect.

Most apprenticeships are registered through the U.S. Department of Labor, ensuring the program meets government standards for fairness, safety and training. If you complete a registered program, you will receive a certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor that documents your qualifications for the career. Also, classroom instruction often can be used to earn a license, certification or degree. Unions have great vocational apprenticeships, if you can get on the list.

The following are high growth industries the federal government has identified for the future. Businesses, colleges and government agencies are promoting job training and apprenticeship programs in these industries:

– health care services
– information technology
– biotechnology
– geospatial technology
– automotive
– retail trade
– construction
– transportation
– hospitality
– financial services
– energy

Some of the union apprenticeship programs are:

Plumbing
Electrical
Welding
Auto Building

For more information on apprenticeships, visit with a career counselor.

You also can find apprenticeship information at the Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration website, http://www.doleta.gov/oa/

Air Conditioning for Schools

Schools live and die by their examination results: good results attract more able students and teaching staff, which in turn leads to further improved results. Therefore a promise of a heat wave from the Met Office can drive fear in to the heart of any headteacher, as the temperatures can seriously affect pupils’ performance.

Exam-time pressures can effect even the most diligent of students and the added burden of soaring temperatures can push some pupils too far. The inability to concentrate and fatigue are two direct symptoms of being too hot, which can be devastating in the exam hall.

It is not only high temperatures on exam day that effect results though. Many schools are ill-equipped to cope with any prolonged period of extreme heat, meaning children can become dizzy, fatigued and struggle to concentrate. If these conditions continue over a number of weeks, the critical exam preparation period and revision time can also be negatively effected.

At present, there is no prescribed maximum temperature for educational establishments except for The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations of 1992, which require employers to take all reasonable steps to ensure that a ‘comfortable’ temperature is maintained. The World Health Organization states that, in temperate climates, the optimum indoor temperature is between 18°C and 24°C but the NASUWT teachers’ union wants an agreed limit of 24°C as the cut-off point for lowering room temperature in the classroom.

Unfortunately very few of the UK’s school buildings are designed for heat waves, such as the one that struck in 2006, when temperatures exceeded 35°C. Not only are premises poorly ventilated but many classrooms have entire walls of glass, ineffective blinds and failing air-conditioning. Not only that, but in some circumstances, today’s children are shoe-horned in to tiny classrooms not designed for such numbers. The result is high temperatures and restless pupils.

On a more positive note, some ‘super green’ schools built in the last three years do have in built air-conditioning but these systems tend to be dual purpose units for heating and cooling and are often under-specified due to budgets. This means that even they struggle to be effective in extreme conditions.

The UK’s temperate climate means that, in general, we do not often experience dramatic extremes in temperature which is good news for schools, colleges and universities. However when a heat wave hits, portable air conditioning can provide a number of benefits such as the ability to hire equipment only when it is needed during extreme conditions or during that all important exam period – keeping cost to a minimum. Hiring portable air conditioning units also provides an assurance of the quality, as only the latest, safest, serviced equipment will be supplied – no further maintenance headaches for management to consider.

There are three main types of portable air conditioning available unit but the one that proves most popular in schools is the exhaust tube model. The main components (the evaporator and condenser) are positioned within the room unit and an ‘exhaust tube’ is used to remove the hot air from the room – usually through a window.

When a heat wave hits, it can be tempting to hire the largest available air conditioning unit. However, it is always worth seeking guidance on the type and size of system for individual circumstances to both maximise the effective removal of hot air and avoid unnecessary operating costs. In particular, within an education setting, it is necessary to consider the health and safety aspects of hiring portable air conditioning to ensure there is a suitable child-friendly setting or location.
